Navvy putting out their debut EP on Angular Records certainly shows self-awareness of their sound. With roots deep in early 80s art punk, they're a spiky spiky proposition but not a retrograde one. There's an energy and freshness in the shared shouty vocals and cowbell, tick-tock percussion that can't help but raise a smile when allied to simple la-la-la tunes and cutting guitars.
So, despite clearly being quite studied in conception, there's a lightness and sense of fun you don't often find in this sort of thing - especially on Letters where male and female vocals brattily trade "I sent you letters" "I sent them back" etc etc. It could almost be party music. Party music for speccy kids that don't like parties, but still...
