Smokers Die Younger Sketchpads
Thee Sheffield Phonographic Corporation

Smokers Die Younger
Smokers Die Younger have obviously been concentrating their efforts on honing themselves into one of the finest live bands in the fair city of Sheffield (and therefore the world). Certainly one new track plus a remix on a single since their rather fabulous album many moons ago hardly speaks of Stakhanovite labour in the studio.
Sketchpads starts off as a jaunty piece of string-enhanced indiepop, featuring a trademark impassioned yelp of a vocal. And if it stayed that way you'd have thought it would have leapt happily into vast and wonderful success. But, in a typical piece of self sabotage, a couple of times it slows down/speeds up into pleasing but uncommercial noodling (prompting you to wonder - is prog what happens when music gets tired?).
The flip side is a straightforward garagey stomp through Yer Actual from the aforementioned album. Unfortunately as a remix it commits the crime of being less interesting in every way than the original (which is very fine). Never mind - here's hoping the a-side catches on.
