Standard Fare

Standard Fare - Krafty
Indiepop aficionados have taken Standard Fare to their hearts, slightly to the band's surprise (if no-one else's). But don't let that put you off. A good band is a good band wherever they're filed, a good song is a good song. Philadelphia is a great song, mixing the charmingly gauche (that 'beatbox' intro) and startlingly confident. An open-hearted, whimsical account of the travails of the long-distance relationship, the swaying jangling verse kicks off into a belter of a chorus, all chopping guitars and Emma Kupa waking up her wonderfully weary voice. It's even got a spoken word ending. Just fab.

If you've been paying attention for the last 12 months though you'll know all that. Don't Tell is the sort of semi-experiment consigned to a b-side so as not to trip up the flow of an album rather than through any lack of quality. Its deliberately uneven circular pace every so often bursts into loud confidences and a just-for-the-hell-of-it guitar break. It's exactly like turning up at the pub late and being accosted by a very drunk friend just before they totter off to spew up or drop off under a table. But in a good way. And you also get the Danny How-vocalled Marker Pens by way of a bonus.

By rights this lot should be more than a small scale word-of-mouth success before long. If you haven't already grab this or catch them live over the summer.
