Thirteen for Eleven - SoundsXP's Tips for 2011

Article written by Paul M - Dec 12, 2010

As one year draws to a close we look forward to the next and some of the bands we’re hoping to hear more of in 2011. While we’re not suggesting any of these will be playing the O2 by the close of the year we do think they’ll be filling our iPod or nestling on our turntable.

So in alphabetical order...

Baaneex
Baaneex
1. Baaneex are Hackney scamps, whose music is difficult to pigeonhole. If you like cute melodies but only if they are cluttered with bonkers yelling and random percussion you’ll rather like them too.

2. Breathe Out are from London and play snotty slacker rock. They played their debut gig last month and, yes, we were impressed!

Cults
Cults
3.Cults are a New York two piece and their summery C86 meets 60s girl pop makes us go all gooey.
Listen to Go Outside here

4. London’s Dead Models have bucketloads of 60s powerpop/garage pop nuggets at their disposal and a pretty damn good live show.
Listen to Tonight: here

5. East London’s Django Django’s debut album is due in 2011 and if surf guitar riffs, harmonious chanting and tribal drumming sound like your bag, then you’d be well advised to catch their live show – a party to end all parties.

Factory Floor
Factory Floor
6. London electropopsters Factory Floor, are the pulsating midpoint between Cabaret Voltaire and Throbbing Gristle.

7. The History Of Apple Pie sound American but are actually yet another bunch from London and their indiepop is dreamy, lo-fi and fuzzy

8. Brooklyn’s La Sera is one of the latest Vivian Girls spin-offs but their brand of fuzzy 60s girl pop sounds mighty fine to us.

S.C.U.M
S.C.U.M
9. S*C*U*M are another London band, whose arty psychedelia-tinged post punk will appeal to Krautrock and Cabaret Voltaire fans.

10. While we shed a tear at the loss of the Broken Family Band, we whooped and hollered at the prospect of more of Steven Adams caustic wit in his new band, Singing Adams. Less country-tinged than the BFB, Singing Adams’ songs are fast and snappy and Adams, the man, continues to put on a fine live show with the songs interspersed with his laugh out loud banter.

Still Corners
Still Corners
11. London’s Still Corners are female fronted dreampopsters. Think of lush fuzzy melodies and Slowdive, Mazzy Star and Galaxie 500…

12. Superhumanoids are melodic Stereolab-esq electropop from LA.

Super Wild Horses
Super Wild Horses
13. And just to prove we’re not totally restricting this list to American and London bands, Super Wild Horses are from Melbourne, Australia and are fuzzy female fronted garage merchants. They’ve had one LP released in the US on Hozac but sadly no UK releases to date.
