On the footballing front, the need to accommodate the “star” names at the expense of a coherent team is a good example of this. To give you a musical analogy: the “Best of the Beatles” on paper is their best album as it contains all the big numbers; but “Revolver” is a better album because it is coherent and assembled in a more measured and thoughtful and free-flowing way (despite having “Goodday Sunshine” on it).
As for the search for the next manager, I’m reminded of the famous Brian Clough quote on being overlooked for the England job in the 70s…
"I'm sure the England selectors thought if they took me on and gave me the job, I'd want to run the show. They were shrewd because that's exactly what I would have done"
I'm sure the same applies today. Its for this reason that someone with a genuine vision on making positive changes (Mourinho for example) will go nowhere near it.
Instead, put your money on a dour, uninspired "safe pair of hands" (ie: not very good): I’m thinking Alladyce or Curbishley. I can’t wait
