Pulp edited the NME in 1996 (a week before the Jarvis/Jackson/arse incident) & Mark Webber the guitarist did the Most Listened to bit. One of his choices was the Peel Slowly & See box with the comment- "Every teenager should be made to listen to this". I was a teenager & a Pulp fan so I went to my local lending library & checked to see what VU was on offer. As it happened the Peel Slowly & See box was available in it's entirety. I got it home & after dismissing the 1st CD of multiple takes of demos I started listening to each LP in order & as much as I loved the 1st 2 records it was what I was expecting noisy songs about deviant things with the quieter songs sung by Nico (but not on WL/WH obviously). When the 3rd LP started I was totally taken aback by the change from WL/WH & even more then when Loaded played. These were POP records. Which is why I preferred them.
From then on it became an obsession & I turned all of my friends onto them becoming almost evangelical about their music. Which I still sort am.
Recently I made a best of VU for my girlfriend's mum. I didn't put Sister Ray or any of the big druk songs on there because I didn't want to scare the horses.
