I pretty much share your own view on this one. That his music was an instrument of protest among white South Africans was independent of his success elsewhere, but the latter not entirely from the portrait of him as an artist who was effectively deported back to obscurity. That is the parallel subject of the film, along with corresponding notions of success and the indomitable spirit that finds alternative valves regardless of conventional ideas of success. The Australia/NW success doesn't undermine this entirely but it certainly chews at the potency of it and has left a funny aftertaste. A remarkable man nonetheless, and a riveting insight to South African resistance. Was sorry to hear the filmmaker took his own life recently.Statistics: Posted by marg — Sun Jun 01, 2014 10:37 am
