As the top five thread hasn't garnered much interest, I thought I'd see if starting a new thread each week would gain it more attention.

Oil City ConfidentialJulien Temple (2009)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1379092/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1Surprising what a good decade it's been for music documentaries; I didn't expect all of my top five to be so recent. As well as the five I've chosen, there has also been Anvil: The Story Of Anvil, End Of The Century, Standing In The Shadows Of Motown, The Echo of Astro Boy's Footsteps, New York Doll, The Punk Syndrome, In Search Of Blind Joe Death and, no doubt, loads that I haven't even thought of. Hard to think of many earlier music documentaries that would come anywhere close to this top five, although Gimme Shelter, Don't Look Back and the Granada Television film of Johnny Cash at San Quentin are all worthy of note.
Also have to mention the West German film The Little Richard Story; maybe the most bizarre music documentary ever; mainly notable for Little Richard stopping co-operation with the film makers early on, leaving them to fill the void with a number of Little Richard impersonators. The white guy with the beard is my favourite one!
