Latest figures show further decline in print media:

http://www.musicweek.com/news/read/musi ... s-2/055758

NME down 13.2% and, even though it's free, they can't give the Fly away!

Which will be the next to fold?

Print media is pointless isn't it?

I don't think it is. Reliance on pure web based media will come back to bite us on the arses one day. I say this as somebody who works in a library environment where more and more money is being pumped into electronic journals when a lot of our students still want to handle something physically. Especially when our systems crash for long periods of time. I love holding a printed magazine. The luddite in me will not give it up. A printed mag makes a great fly killer also or spy glass.

I buy 2 magazines - a music weekly and a music monthly. Mainly to support the only newsagents on the island I live on, as they've had to increase the prices of all magazines just to stay afloat because it costs them extra to get them here. I'm thinking of stopping that because I can't afford it and I rarely read them properly anyway. Plus, as a raging environmentalists I won't be sad to see the los of all that paper waste.

Hard to tell to what extent NME sales are down because of the rise in web based media and how much of it is down to it being shit.

I stopped buying it about 4 years ago after about 15 years of religiously doing so. Never even think about it any more.

Record Collector is only regular purchase with a 1 in 3 dabble with Mojo.

Since the Word went to the wall I haven't bought one. I fear the Kindle is to blame. If I'm stuck for reading on the train these days I can get a novel/full music book for pretty much the price of a monthly mag without having to endure the massive station queues in Smiths. No contest I'm afraid. Was always most interested in new music leads and I can get enough of those off here and a couple of other sites.

Only print mag I get now is When Saturday Comes, and their standards have fallen so much recently they've even printed articles I've written.

I stopped buying NME when I was in my early 20s, about 6 or 7 years ago. Then I started buying it again about 6 months ago for the crossword and because I find it interesting to watch it's downfall/transition.

The NME pushed bands (whose labels money are basically keeping the mag going) are pushed so desperately and transparently that it's cringeworthy and really funny. Every issue there are 'letters' that are so blatantly fake, praising one or more of these bands - Haim, Palma Violets, Foals, Peace etc.

I find it really funny when someone tries to persuade me that I like something or that I want something. Or even better, when something tries to tell you what you think it itself is. Kind of like how David Brent tries to tell you that he's a 'chilled out entertainer', or a 'motivator' with tell tale darting eyes and a snidey mouth. It's like 'these bands DO matter, and they ARE stars and you know it, cuz I just told you so'.

As their desperation has grown, so has the public's cynicism toward anything that isn't in some way DIY. People's ability to weed out bullshit and read between the lines has increased - especially in music, and the corporate music world has been left standing still.

I guess I also read it because I'm obsessed with Pop culture, and I think it's a really interesting time for music.

One of the many final nails in NME's coffin for me was their annual cool list. You knew the list was arbitrary and corrupt and reading lies about why these talentless vacuous morons deserved not just your attention but slavish devotion.
