There are some very intelligent computer minded souls on here (that's the arse licking out of the way) Help!

Chaz has got a modem router to play his gears of war online and it's been working fine but the other day it just stopped - it comes up with the message about DNS not working. It's nothing to do with the internet connection as I have reverted back to my other modem for now...i'll stop there as I have got no idea what i'm talking about.

Does anybody know what this means?

DNS is Domain Name Service - it's the service that tells an IP number where a physical address is (eg http://www.soundsxp.com is a domain but the actual physical address is a server that will have some long 12 digit number. If I were you I'd Google the exact error message you are getting and see where it takes you. You'll probably find the exact cause listed pretty quickly.

Thanks, Bovey. Can that be fixed then? I don't get why it happened. Why would that happen?

DNS errors happen all the time for a variety of reasons. Some local to your PC, some more global ie your network or even the whole web. Search in Google using the exact phrase and other useful info eg the game name or whatever and you'll probably see the solution.

Turn the router off, take the leads out including the power supply and disconnect it from the PC. Then reconnect and turn it all back on again after a minute or two which will force the modem to relocate it's DNS settings etc from the server. Simple but effective!

As Bola said... he beat me to it. Although it's common to suggest doing the unplug for 5 minutes minimum, to allow the circuit boards to completely discharge. Generally unnecessary, but an extra step if needed. Good luck, Cavey.
