My band are supporting The Silver Apples next month (just posted a gig notice so I wont repeat it here).
I have to admit to not knowing anything at all about the band until I did some research and I got to say I now find them fascinating. Do people on here know about them?
This is just an over simplified potted history:
The band formed in New York in 1967
Founder members are artist Simeon Coxe and percussionist Danny Taylor.
Mix with artists, poets and become part of the New York avant garde scene with a cult following.
Simeon Coxe 'created' out of necessity a portable oscillator sort of forerunner to the synth.
Recorded two innovative and creative albums.
Their record lable folded in 1970 just before the release of their third album and they then split up.
The manager confiscates their equipment due to a financial dispute
A couple of decades later Silver Apples music can be traced in techno, pop-synth, inductrial bands of the 80s/90s.
Renewed interest in their music.
Simeon Coxe reforms the band without Danny Taylor, whereabouts unknown.
A chance phone to call to a radio station by Danny Taylor and he's put in touch with Simeon.
The early albums are re-released plus the third album is released in 1997.
Tours follow.
in 1999 Their tour van crashes and Simeon breaks his kneck and is partially paralysed and they break up again.
Danny Taylor dies in 2005
Simeon makes a succesful come back tour in 2007.
ATP invite from Portishead.
2008 US, Ireland & UK tour plus festivals.
Fascinating stuff.
