My best heckle:

Jesus and Mary Chain - Bristol Sound City - some Uni type venue 1995. That was being broadcast live on Radio 1.

After a rather miserable song about ending a life (The Perfect Crime) -

From middle of mosh pit - I shout 'Play a happy song!'

Mild laughter from the crowd around me.....

Jim Reid responds (something they never usually do) - 'No!'

Huge laughter from the crowd.

(I got it recorded via Radio 1)

This recording appeared on a BBC live concert CD a few years ago - sadly the heckle had being edited out.

best riot - one of the first gigs i ever went to on my own, the clash at manchester apollo in 1977. the previous week i had been there to see the stranglers and it was horrible. the apollo was awful back then, you had to stay in your seat and if you stood up the bouncers beat you up and threw you out (some of you may have seen great footage of iggy prancing around with a horses tail and the crowd just siting there). anyway this happened all night at the stranglers gig and there was loads of fighting, but i dont think they realised that the crowd for the clash would be almost exactly the same people. the clash came of and launched into londons burning and the place went ballistic. end of the song there wasnt a bouncer to be seen as they had all got battered and there wast a seat left standing.

more recent stuff tends to revolve around bsp, who often end up with much of the crowd on stage playing instruments while the band are in the audience.
best crowdsurfing ever was at the scala one night when i looked over and saw a panda!

Mudhoney. One of their early London gigs, was enlivened when a few tykes started stage diving. The bouncers made a really big deal of clearing the stage, only for the band to announce "we're not gonna do another song until everyone in the audience has got up on stage". About 50% of the audience got up and the band did their next number. At the end of the song, the bouncers spent 10 minutes clearing the stage. Straight after the next song, the band announced "we're not gonna do another song until the whole audience has climbed up on top of the PA". Cue total mayhem! The music was crap, but the chaos was top entertainment.
The Black Lips gig at Heaven last week was also enlivened by the bouncers over- reaction to a few stage divers. After a couple of rather lame stage dives, the bouncers signalled for the power to the PA to be cut. This only served to incite both band and fans. Nothing like the palaver at the Mudhoney gig, but I was particularly entertained when at the end of the set, the guitarist asked the bouncers if they could allow people up for the last song; while the bouncers furiously waved their hands and shook their heads, the guitarist turned to the crowd and stated "they said "yes"!"
