Oh dear. I can't believe I have to stress this again. I have been saying that quite basically if you get two bands of equal talent and A has loadsa money and connections and B has nowt it is more likely that A will make it for obvious reasons:
1. They don't need to keep the day job so can focus on goal more.
2. Mummy and daddy will give them their house and turn it into a recording studio.
3. They can pump loads of money into the production side and buy loads of it also to get it on the map.
As for The Hours and Damien Hirst - they're crap, especially the latter, the con-artist. Age can have an impact but not if you have something. The Hours did not have anything so he was throwing money at a turd. Go speak to the likes of Jay Z - he's in his 40's. The kids still want a piece of him.
You could say that there are other factors present but I was discussing money and class only in this case and it is a cast iron fact that money takes you places in music (if you have the talent) If you have the talent but little money more often than not you will fail because realities such as bills get in the way. There are few exceptions.
