I think it's all a terrible shame. NME should exist, it should be a great resource for people to discover new music through and celebrate the music they already love. Especially for people (like me) who grew up in the sticks, it (along with John Peel) represented a whole new world beyond the twin record emporiums of, er, WH Smith and Woolies. It's a huge pity it decided to become all Timmy Mallett-wacky, entirely uncritical, sensational and to insult its readers' intelligence rather than remain a vital part of the music scene. Perhaps I'm being slightly misty-eyed but I'm sure I remember it being quite good - albeit 20-odd years ago.

Its not fair to blame them entirely for the decline. It is a valid point that there’s now a lot more competition. And I’m not just talking internets: every Sunday broadcast will now have a half-decent music section or supplement (this wasn’t the case as recently as a decade ago). The music industry’s hi-jacking of the charts and the download music stuff has also played its part.

So – to use a wanky corporate phrase – the key to its success has been “managing decline”, and this is where they fucked up. They watered-down, cut costs, became subservient to their corporate paymasters and generally appealed to the lowest common denominator in order to boost sales: all this with seemingly no recognition of the fact that they were unable to lead the music debate in the same way they used to.

I always reckoned they should just turn it into a glossy monthly. Kind of like Q, but with less emphasis on 40-something Pink Floyd fans. This way you can maintain editorial quality and voice, which – lets face it – is the only advantage they can possibly have over everything else

Its makes me sad everytime I seen NME now. It really did used to be my bible once upon a time

The Strokes and The Libertines (sorry Libs fans) were the horsemen of NME's apocolypse.

that's when 'indie' really became a fashion and not a genre.
