I think Jose might be on to something when he links it to where you hear the music. I don’t like GnR in general but I find that Appetite works well when it’s played very loud. I always associate first hearing it with going to Canada and being taken to bars and dodgy clubs by cousins where I heard those songs at high volume. They're hook-filled and mercilessly effective when you crank them right up.

It also requires a step back now to reassess bands if for what ever reason you had a closed mind at the time. When G n R were first around I was into the melodic but gloomy post-C86 indie bands like Wedding Present, House of Love, etc and have always put a barrier up with bands that have lead breaks going back to school when I was the kid in the skinny tie into new wave/mod/post-punk and the majority of the school were into heavy rock and prog.

I've always had an aversion to the Beatles which stems from my parentts playing them constantly when I was a kid, but recently I've tried listening to them again...... and I still don't like 'em!

I love them.

I was 12/13 when I first heard Appetite For Destruction & in the middle of the "I hate myself & want to die" grunge attack they were a breath of stupid air.

Then Britpop began to stir (Girls & Boys on The Word was my first exposure to that) & I got my mullet cut off & never wore long shorts again.

I do still listen to G'n'R every now & again. It's So Easy & Bad Apples being particular favourites.

I haven't given it any great thought, but off the top of my head I don't think there's any artists I originally disliked that, on reflection, I think are now actually not too bad. Normally, my first impressions are still the ones I have, though, as is probably normal, it's more the case that stuff I used to like I'm not necessarily so keen on now. That could just be the old familiarity breeding contempt thing at play, mind you...

Who does anyone like now that they didn't used to? I thought we were in for a GnR confession from BJ there, but sadly disappointed...
