I got given a £50 HMV voucher for my birthday. When I went to spend it (the day after) I found out that there was £100 on it due to a clerical error by the staff. I’ve still got £30 left on it but they're not being honoured apparently. Bastards.

It would be a shame to see HMV go. However poor they are and we’ve commented before on the priority they give to records and films compared to games now, it will be a shock to lose that high street presence. But I think it just shows that you can’t sell everything to everyone and beat the online retailers. The future looks quite messy: individual specialist shops selling physical product and majoring on their knowledge and service, and supermarkets selling stacks of the most popular CDs. But it might be an opportunity for people too, thinking of your thread of the other day re setting up shops, to start small record shops and put that obsessive knowledge to work at last!

I hope that Fopp survives though. And Head in Bromley, as the people are pleasant, something I'll never be able to say about Amazon. Spare a thought too for the HMV staff - don't they have something like 4000 employees?

If HMV still had shops like this, I'd be much more sorry to see them go.

As it is I'm gutted for the staff who will lose their jobs, but otherwise feel that HMV has been dead to me since the day they closed their original Oxford Street store.

University towns is definitely a way in I reckon. Like I said, a good record shop with good location would work down here (I think).
