The highlights of today's stage will be well worth watching folks.

oof. Last year's Tour was good for the result, but a bit dull. This has been a cracking race, and they haven't even got to the nuts bit yet.

Who'd have thought such a flat and innocuous looking stage would have such an affect on GC. Think Froome could end up paying for weakness elsewhere in the Sky team.
Shands, I don't have Eurosport. Do you and if so how much cycling have you watched this year. I was wondering about the form of Bernie Eisel & Christian Knees and if they didn't make the team on poor form or if Sky management were determined to include more British riders. Seems they are missing some of the experience those two could have offered. At the same time though, you have to credit the tactics of the other teams in isolating Froome on that last day in the Pyrenees and the way Saxo Tinkoff forced the split yesterday.

I do have Eurosport yes, and I’ve been glued to practically every race of the season thus far. It’s not easy to get an accurate measure of the form of Knees and Eisel to be honest because a lot of the work they do is often before the cameras come on, or hidden within the peleton. Eisel actually hasn’t done a great deal of stage racing at all this year and perhaps he paid the price for what was a disappointing classics display overall for Sky (though he himself performed well enough).

I expected Knees certainly to be in the Tour team, and I was surprised by the selection of both Lopez and Suitsou. The former looked very strong at Paris-Nice but has been on a downward trajectory ever since and struggled considerably in the Dauphine, form (or lack of it) that’s continued on into the Tour. Equally Suitsou was excellent in Trentino but his goal was peaking for the Giro, and although he dropped out of that early, it was a big ask for him to retain top shape through into July.

I think you’re right they do like to encourage British riders development if possible, but on what I’ve seen Stannard, Kennaugh, and Thomas all definitely merited their selections and the latter two were in exceptional form just prior to the start of this race. With Mick Rogers departure though you would have expected they’d want a bit more experience and knowledge within the team.

I also think they’ve been a victim of their own ambition somewhat. Brailsford clearly believed it was possible for them to win all three Grand Tours this year so split his resources accordingly. To me sending both Uran and Heano to the Giro may have been the best thing for Wiggins, but it showed a bit of over confidence with regard to the Tour De France – or extreme faith in his team leaders individual capabilities depending on how you look at it.

It should be said though they’ve been unfortunate. Thomas, Stannard and Kennaugh all tangled up in crashes they could do little about. EBH you could argue shouldn’t have been up there for the sprint at this stage in the race but he was still unlucky to be hit so hard. There’s also a feeling that perhaps they’ve over trained too much in Tenerife prior to the race and are now feeling the impact (i.e Kiryenka blowing up). Personally I felt Froome looked far skinnier than he should have been when the race began and that may be to his detriment come week three, I guess we’ll find out soon enough.

Stage 9 and Stage 13 have been two of the best in the Tour that I can remember in a long time....and as I’m not much of a Froome fan let’s have more of the same please!

That all sounds like very sound reasoning.
I stopped taking Eurosport about ten years ago, partly because of cost and partly after I found myself taking time off work to watch the Tour Of Malaysia, I thought watching cycling was taking to much of my time. Mostly follow the season on the internet now, plus whatever is on free to air TV.
Having not watched so much this year, it's hard to always value my own judgement, but I thought Knees would be a shoe-in for a Tour place.
Don't think it's any coincidence that the move which split the field yesterday was initiated by the team that included Michael Rogers, think Sky have lacked an experienced on road captain this year, which is what made me think of Eisel. You're definitely right about them spreading themselves too thinly this year. They could end up with nothing much to show for it; Uran would certainly have made his presence felt. I'd read enough to see that Stannard & Kennaugh were in the sort of form to make their selection likely and as you say the injuries have played a part. The collapse of Kiryenka and Porte's failure to stay with leading group do look to be down, at least partly, to poor judgement
Thanks for your thoughts Shands. Not sure if the extra tough final week will result in a terrific climax to what has been a superb tour, or if it will prove too tough for any decisive attacks. Looking forward to it, either way.

Caught just under an hour of Eurosport's coverage today. Liggett and Sherwin get a lot of criticism but I dont' mind them. However I really struggled to understand Stephen Roache, thanks to his thick accent. I ended up going to mute as it was too distracting trying to decipher the guy's comments.

It gets addictive doesn't it Milch... something brought home to me when I found myself sat watching an internet stream of a sprint stage in the Tour of Qatar! I think you're spot on about Rogers, his influence is definitely being felt at Saxo and bringing out the best in Roche and Kreuziger also. When you throw in that Contador has a strong tactical brain too, it's certainly one area where they have a distinct advantage over both Sky and Movistar.

Bov you may have just been unfortunate with your timing. Generally it's now Sean Kelly who does the co-commentary on Eurosport and his Irish brogue is much easier to decipher than Roche's. They have had Roche popping in to do the odd half hour spot the last few days though so perhaps you were unlucky to catch one of those moments. It's a shame actually that he is so difficult to understand because generally his take on events is very perceptive and informed.

I can't be doing with the ITV coverage personally, it's not a patch on Eurosport for me.

Ventoux today, very excited.

Yeah it switched to Kelly a bit later. Both are Tour legends of course and their insight is valuable. I was an early adopter when they were contenders, along with of course LeMond, Fignon and Delgado. And our very own Sean Yates. In those days it was on at a nice friendly time (think it was 6:30) but then they started faffing around and I ended up missing too much and lost interest. Still dip in for the Alps though and today could be amazing.

No mention of yesterday?

I was watching it through my fingers last night after my partner had mentioned "What's this about Froome and a crash?" seconds before the highlights started. I shushed her and was relieved when it was just Contador acting like a man who wants his face pebbledashed with gravel.

Don't understand why Froome was whining about Contador being reckless on the descent; with over four minutes gap, Froome could have eased back a little and let Contador take the risks without endangering him.
Booked tomorrow off work for double Alpe D'Huez.

I hate this though - gender segregation - it should just be a race for humans.

I don't see why men and women can't compete against each other at some sports, but generally anything that requires extra physical strength or speed men will always do better at. That's not sexist it's just fact. I'm sure any of the Olympic female sprinters could beat me in a race by miles, but the fastest time over every distance when it comes to running, swimming, cycling and so on are held by men. As I'd expect are things like weightlifting. I'm pretty sure the Lions would beat a British female Rugby team too. That's just the way people are built. If you didn't have segregation or whatever you want to call it then I think you'd see less women in sport.

I see no reason why the likes of snooker, darts, shooting, fencing and maybe even some gymnastic events can't include both genders though. Possibly golf too, but then would all competitors use the same tee or would you still have a ladies tee?
