One reason the police insist that parents of a missing/dead child go on TV to make some sort of appeal is to check out their reactions. In this unnatural situation, it is (apparently) quite easy for Psychologists to work out whether the parents are in some way involved. For the McCann’s to have BOTH kept to their story over such a long period of time under such media scrutiny suggests they are telling the truth.

So, they’re innocent I reckon, which makes what’s happened to them the last week pretty despicable

I think the police (like any rational person who looked at all the evidence and ignored the media circus) knew from day one that the parents were hiding something. The only time they've stated that they were official suspects was following the revalation of some concrete evidence that positively tied them to the case.
The police all along were saying that they weren't suspects - when it was blatently obvious that they were the prime suspects, basically because they were the only suspects!

My conclusion (3 months ago I maight add) was drawn from examining the evidence as it came out, and as the case evolves and the parents activities become more erratic and strange, nothing I've heard has convinced me any other way.

What has shocked me today is them saying to the press that they're using some (actually a shitload) of the money raised by the Find Madeline Campaign to fund thier legal defence!

Shocking! Not the actions of a rational person without something to hide.

Good article in todays independent regarding the media backlash on Mrs McCann because she refuses to break down in public. It highlighted the similar circumstances with the public perception of both Joanne Lees (Falconio murder) and Lindy Chamberlain (Dingo baby case) who were both proven innocent but not before the media and in Chamberlains case the courts finding them guilty.

My question would be who hired the hire car before and after the McCanns? Seems the Portugese police are a bit clueless when it comes to such an obvious thing to try and find out!

The portugese police are clueless and if anybody is trying to cover their tracks, it's them - from what I hear the whole way the case was/is being handled is a shambles.
The truth will out anyway and i'll be most surprised if the parents are to blame - as Matty said, if they're not to blame the way that they have been treated is despicable.
