Figure that I get to have a go for getting George Melly right.
Here's three, in ascending order of difficulty, but all, I think, with plenty of clues.
1) *** ***** (real name Richard Marsh, born in Salt Lake City, Utah) is an American rock and roll singer.
He was the singer of 1960s garage rock band *** *****. ***** began his career performing doo-wop influenced pop tunes in the early 60s under the name Little Richie Marsh. After changing his name to *** *****, he began playing with the Electra-Fires and the Soul Rockers before finally starting the legendary psych group *** ***** in 1965.
In the 1970s he became a member of The Source Family, a communal religious group led by Father Yod.
3) ******** ***** (born ********* ***** *****, 7 September 1951, Akron, Ohio) is an American rock musician, best known as the leader of the band *** **********
***** joined a band called Sat. Sun. Mat. (which included Mark Mothersbaugh from Devo) while attending Kent State University's Art School
In late 1976, ***** responded to an advertisement in Melody Maker for band members and attended an audition for the band that would become 999. Later, ***** tried to start a group with Mick Jones from The Clash.
After the band failed to take flight, Malcolm McLaren placed ***** as a guitarist in Masters of the Backside, but ***** was asked to leave the group just as the band became The Damned and spent a brief spell in the Johnny Moped band.
***** also spent a short time with *** ***** ********* in 1978. Named after two *****-*******, the band consisted of future Visage front man Steve Strange on vocals, Vince Ely on drums, and Mark Ryan (aka The Kid) and ******** on guitar. The band's name alone was enough to start controversy
3)****** ****** "*****" ****** (born 1957) is an American musician, radio personality, painter and the lead singer of the group ******** *******
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, he is the son of actor ***** ******, best known as Dallas-based kids' TV host "Mr. Peppermint." ****** was a star on his high school's basketball team, and he attended Trinity University to study accounting. While at Trinity, ***** was the captain of the basketball team, president of his fraternity, and was named the Accounting Student of the Year. After graduating, he went to work as an auditor for Peat Marwick accounting firm. After a year of working in accounting, he formed the ******** *******, a group who became notorious for their elaborate stage shows and pervasive, psychedelic music.
