The only physical format which is actually practical at this time is CD.

CDs last for fucking ages, the quality of them doesn't diminish the more music you put on them, they're small, YOU CAN PUT THEM DIRECTLY INTO ANY COMPUTER (and thus onto ipods). And on top of that, they're the cheapest format to print!

Why are they 'ugly'? I've come to believe that their practicality makes them beautiful.

Having played in a band that had the "only release on vinyl" ethos that so many 'desperate to be accepted', 'no real ideas' bands adopt, I can categorically state that all it meant for us was that we released far less material than we should've, which in turn meant that we had less coverage than we could've gotten, and ended up limiting our own opportunities dramatically.

Pretty dumb, huh? And yet I see countless bands doing the exact same thing still now. And for what? Aesthetic pleasure? Image? To tread the tried and trodden path your heroes walked? How punk.

It's bizarre that all these punk/indie bands/labels who are so desperate for street cred will only consider releasing on THEE MOST EXPENSIVE and THEE MOST SUPERFLUOUS formats around. It embarrasses me that I fell into this trap myself as a young twat.

Imagine if bands in the 60's had wasted all their time insisting that their records be released on gramophone discs or whatever...they were too busy going forward and simply using the most practical, cheap format available.

CDs are great things. And ultimately, a lump of matter is a lump of matter, what's really important is the information that's contained within.

Tapes and Vinyl are nice luxuries if someone wants to put you onto them, but this hang up over releasing on CD needs to end. Bands should be making their own CDs, doing their own artwork, using their limitations to their advantage.

Forwards, not backwards.

Hear hear, for all that I like, and buy, vinyl, vinyl-only would be daft. CDs are fine. Jewel cases might be shite, but there's plenty of lovely CD packagings for those that care. And as for the cassette revival, I've already poured scorn at length and promised to shut up. But jose's right, the CD does everything the cassette does only better and everyone can listen to it.

Certainly not going to argue with Jose over the practicalities of CDs. I have a huge collection of them and for long players continue to buy them over other formats for practicality and cost. But I don't argue that they are attractive nor that they make my heart skip a beat in my hands. Vinyl does that. It's daft but it's still a beautiful format. I guess it's like holding a shoe in your hands. DMs are expensive and fairly impractical but are iconic and beautiful Trainers are cheaper and comfortable but I just don't like them. Many younger people think differently but I'll still buy DMs and hobble about with an empty wallet...
