An interesting one that George Weah one. There's no tricks or sublime close control, it's a mish mash of poor defending, ricochets but fair bit of pace and then, bearing in mind he's run the length of a pitch, a more than decently struck finish. Needless to say we never saw that sort of form when the former World Player of the Year turned up in Moss Side in 2000...

Fashions and capabilities change. That Weah goal was astounding for the time. Going further back this was goal of the season when Forest won the championship. I remember the genuine astonishment at Gemmill's running. These days there'd be 30 secs grumbling that he wasn't picked up and move on.

RE: That Weah goal, still remember Peter Brackley's commentary when he poked it in the onion: "David Beckham eat your heart out!" A reference to his half way line lob which was scored just weeks previous. Not sure there's much comparison between running the entire length of the pitch and smashing one over an ill-positioned Neil Sullivan from 50 yards but, still.

I think a lot of the stuff with pace and running the length of the pitch or whatever, has a fair bit to do with the state of the pitches. With some of the semi-artificial pitches we have at top grounds now, plus pre-watering them to make them more zippy, plus a lighter ball, then speed and so on will naturally increase compared to dragging a couple of kilos of saturated leather through some mud. Plus player fitness will have improved I'm sure. Its well known that Cryuff was a heavy smoker - imagine if he'd had the fitness of some of today's players!

It's like that Giggs goal - it was the pace as much as the nutmeg that made it so good. His goal against Arsenal was probably the best he scored but I thought that would be too obvious.

As for Collymore - I can still remember where I was watching those Liverpool-Newcastle games. And that's rare for me unless it's England or United playing! Proper entertaining footy.
