Ils Sont Fous Ces Gaulois!

1st of four volumes of Francophonic gems, encompassing yé-yé, garage, psychegaelic freak beat & other oddities.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5hcNJLQcx0

For the garage rockers:
Alix ... J'ai Mon Amerique
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI5uqyyg_8w

Label samplers are pretty common things, but I got this one free when I signed up to the Memphis Industries street team several years ago for some reason. Not really a bad track on it. Not too fussed about The Pipettes, but The Go! Team are always amazing, and The Black Neon track is frigging great. First time I heard El Perro Del Mar and Dungen too, and their track is awesome!

1 The Go! Team - We Just Won't Be Defeated
2 Dungen - Panda
3 The Russian Futurists - Paul Simon
4 The Squire of Somerton - Forgotten Son
5 Absentee - Something to Bang
6 Field Music - You're So Pretty
7 The Black Neon - Ralph & Barbara
8 The Pipettes - Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me
9 El Perro del Mar - This Loneliness

Have to say I am loving the diversity of the comps being thrown up by this thread.

22. More Light - J Mascis & The Fog

Another real classic for me and I'm sure others too. Got this as a present from an ex-girlfriend for the Christmas of 2003 if I remember right. It was around the time that I'd started to take the notion of being in punk bands more seriously as a long term thing - kinda like a religion rather than a hobby, something I knew I was gonna would do forever - and this compilation was like cement for that notion for me, with The Dirtbombs' version of 'Underdog' becoming something of a mantra that I listen to at least twice a day every day since then (no joke).

First time I'd ever heard life changers like Thee Headcoats, The Dirtbombs, The Gories, Pere Ubu, Guitar Wolf, The Cramps, Rocket From The Tombs and Electric Eels.

Incredible compilation, feels more like a sonic bible to me than a cd. God Bless punk rock!

Nice. I have somewhere between a third and half of those on other things, but still might pick one up if I see one.

Any comp with The Electric Eels, Modern Lovers, Pussy Galore, Crime, Dirtbombs, Birthday Party, Suicide, Fall, Saints, Cramps, Pere Ubu, Gories and Butthole Surfers, all bands I've posted in the classics thread is fine by me. Might spend sometime over the weekend checking out the few bands on this comp that I'm not familiar with (that's The Embarrassment, Thomas Jefferson Slave Apartments, Gaunt, PW Long with Reelfoot, L.A.L., Red Red Meat & Trans Am).

Saturday - 'Til things are Brighter

The album that put the stetson on the side of my head. Cash covers for the Terence Higgins Trust got together by the Mekons and Lard - long before country got trendy, and obvs Cash's full backing for an AIDS benefit album was pretty notable. The production is sometimes a bit lacking but the heart in every one is fully present. Really love Marc Almond's man in Black.

Is the Mary Mary track any good? They seem a bit out of place! Mind you, I don't know about a third of the acts on there.

It's Mary Mary as in the singer of Gaye Bykers on Acid - is there a band by that name too?

And yes it's an ace version of Boy Named Sue.

Trojan Calypso Box Set

Strictly speaking, this probably should be called Trojan Mento Box Set, featuring, as it does, the Jamaican variant on calypso; calypso itself being more indigenous to Trinidad & Tobago.
One of several Trojan 3 CD boxed sets released in the early 2000s. The late lamented Mr CD in Berwick St stocked many of them for £5 a pop, making them well worth a punt.

Random sample track:
