I think Rio was always cruising to losing the captaincy because of his neverending injury woes, so Capello clearly had to address the issue, and the obvious candidates are those who are likely to be ever-presents. The whole thing became a complete mess from the time Terry had the captaincy stripped from him following that tabloid nonsense before the WC. I'm no fan - the bloke's a complete c**t - but I thought it set a poor precedent to demote someone, esp. a footballer, because of their poor moral compass. They really aren't role models in the sense of Bobby Moore, etc, if anything they encapsulate the modern psyche perfectly and are thus in tune with general society....

The current mess seems to be down to the fact that certain players with upcoming CL games were always going to be let go early, meaning yet another appointment for tomorrow night's extravaganza, which I hope will mark the first occasion an African nation beats England at Wembley.

On the other hand, maybe Capello's man-management skills have been overrated before now and we never really bothered about it because he looked as if he was the right man for the job?

It seems to me that he's not interested. He was clearly a good manager before but maybe his man management skills are shit. They have been lately.
Terry is great on the pitch but shit off it. The squad changes so much from game to game it must be difficult to know who to pick. So after the 'permenant' reinstation of Terry last week we now have a new captain for the next game.

the point generally stands however, if i was a villa fan i would be furious that downing and young are playing, specially so as its obvious that ghana are going to put a foot in.

just thinking of dean ashton makes me a bit sad. i think he had flown a little under the radar generally but west ham fans were already resigned to losing him to a bigger club. big, quick, good in the air, shot in either foot, a few tricks - the anti heskey. he really had it all and then .....

Aye twas a shame about Ashton. Scored a cracker v us in the quarters the year you went onto the cup final.

Noticed there were 4 City players playing for England last night. Clearly we were less precious than other clubs. Bet Milner comes back crocked.
