anyone here think blokes get a rough ride when it comes to getting colds etc? what's up with the "man flu" phenomenon? i'm not talking proper scary sickness just the regular colds and bugs that we all get one or two fo most years. i managed to come down with one this week. started with an ear infection that diversified into a sore thoat, itchy eyes and the usual sneezing, coughing cold sympoms. i didn't make a fuss, went to work, did the gigs i was supposed to and attended the social functions i said i would without complaint. but by yesterday morning i felt i'd be honestly better off taking the day off to catch up on missed sleep, rest, rehydrate and recover. so i did. now half the girls i know are queing up to jokingly accuse me of suffering "man flu" and making a big fuss about nothing! what gives? am i not allowed to get unwell occasionally? and why do certain ladies think it's fair game to belittle a chap's suffering, even if it pretty little to begin with. i'm not claiming to have survived the plague or endured any great ordeal here, i just want to be left alone to sneeze in peace. i don't want to hear about childbirth and PMT and pain thresholds, i just want to be treated like i'd treat someone in a similar position... i'd be strung up by my balls if i was to greet my partner's sickness (which is much more common and protracted) with anything other than sympathy, understanding and a steady flow of painkillers and hot drinks. so how come on the very few times that i'm actually sick enough to warrant a day off to recover, i get subjected to constant jibes about about being a big old fusspot man-flu faker? are men really big babies whe it comes to getting ill? do women try and soldier on through things that should have them tucked up in bed for a couple of days? are these just tired gender stereotypes (this gets my vote). thoughts? |

hahaha you're just grumpy because you have man flu! ;-) i say fuck 'em dude. one of those really cliched old stereotypes that people wheel about without even realising they're being a twatface, try doing any of these things and not have to deal with 60% of people give you the same tired line: - moving in with significant other (oooh when's the wedding) - dating a girl from the former USSR (you bought her off the internet) - dating a girl you met on the internet (she's probably going to kill you and then eat you and then throw up and then eat you again) - going to amsterdam (meh meh meh drugs meh meh prossies) - split up with a long-term partner (never really liked them anyway) - admit to enjoying work with children (you're a paedo) etc etc |

I always tend to work through colds and flu (part of having hayfever is that you get used to shrugging your shoulders and getting on with it) but was out cold at around March last year where I was ill for five days, didn't eat for four of those days (I was even throwing up after drinking water) and was unconscious for about sixty hours at one point. If you're ill, you're ill. |
