[pedant]He was not declared Prime Minster until May 2nd 2007[/pedant] But I remember that morning really well; a bright day of hope; as if a horrible big cloud had shifted after years of pissing on us.. Things were never going be that different though really, and Blair admitted as much in his acceptance speech as I recall… But he’s done some good things as well as bad; modern politicians are never black and white, good and evil; its always shades of grey and compromises: this is what his “third way” was really about. In some respects, at least the Irag war debacle will give him something to be remembered by; what the fuck else is there? Can’t help feeling for sorry for Gordon Brown (texture like sun), though. Clearly a more gifted politician than Blair, and impeccable handling of the economy for a decade and he gets the top job at the same time his country votes for independence .. you couldn’t make it up |

Back to Blair though Matt, you're right, that night in May 1997 was amazing. It really did seem like EVERYONE was deliriously happy. Like winning the World Cup. A far cry from the feeling 5 years earlier when all those built up hopes were dashed. The equivalent of yet another penalty shoot out ending with some lummox hoofing the ball into row Z (not that I'm calling Kinnock a lummox). |
