So... should he have been given a Knighthood? Not read anything by him so can't comment on his literary talents but personally think it was a case of chucking petrol on the fire for the UK by honouring him at this point in time (even if only because the concept of Freedom of Speech is not widely appreciated by the Muslim faith). |

He is certainly deserved of the knighthood as he is indisputably one of the greatest writers of his generation (can’t believe you haven’t read any BJ, go and read “Midnight’s Children” NOW) That said, I find it hard to believe that the people who give these things out (or Rushdie himself) didn’t nip this is the bud. I don’t think anyone would have thought that al-Zawahiri would start posting videos about it but you’d have to be very, very naïve to think that the Muslim fellas would have let this past unnoticed. It is, of course, wrong that fundamentalists can prevent someone being honoured for something but we shouldn’t be jeapordising some poor bloke’s life to make a point. I wonder if Salmon had a say in it? |
