No, I love all that wizard stuff, José - but i'm a lord of the rings girl and I couldn't bond with Harry Potter as I find him annoying. ![]() Sometimes I think the Potter experience takes over the book itself - like people read it because of this potter frenzy - it's become a trend rather than a story to me. She probably hates the way that the book has become a 'monster' almost. Chaz saw the film the other day and said it was rubbish. He said they covered the first two hundred pages in twenty minutes! I think you could watch the films without reading the books and vice versa as the transfer over to film has not been as faithful as LOTR's. |

ah you grumpy old sods! they're great! i read the first three or four in a row a couple of years back and have read all the subsequent ones. mrs dookerdoo finished the new one last night and i'll be starting it next week (when i finally finish "the island of the day before" by umberto eco). saw the latest film last weekend too. it's great. fantastic cast, great story with a really dark, gothic feel to it and those kids are getting better with each one. i'm by no means the type to queue up in a funny hat and i'm not normally into wizardy fantasy shit (i fucking hate lord of the rings for example) but the books are great. it's no mean feat writing, what seven books? that appeal so strongly to kids and adults alike. they're morally complex, emotionally engaging and loads of fun. like it or not it's become a big part of the UK's cultural export and like josé said it's got millions of kids reading. and reading intelligent and imaginative material. so media fenzy or not (i tend to ignore all the fluff that surrounds these things so i don't really care about that aspect anyway) i reckon it's a very good thing. |

Nice hat. Nah, i'm not grumpy and I do hate when people say that. What? Because I shant jump on the bandwagon or pretend to like something to belong? I had all that with 'Lost' The amount of stick I took of friends and family - 'What do you mean you don't like lost?' (disgusted looks and leper treatment) Like I said, it's great as it gets children reading again but I hate the frenzy behind it. That's what annoys me. Saturation. Help lines. And so on and so forth. |

It doesn't appeal to me but I don't think you can say she's a bad writer! Any author who can make my chaz's eyes go watery with sadness gets some form of gold star from me. Mein Kampf is a great read...just kidding. I can't believe you're putting her in the same paragraph as Hitler, matty...*goes away to stick a tasch and swastika on harry's cloak...* |
