Richard Hawley sometimes does a live version of I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry with a guy from Manchester called Clive on harmonica, who is absolutely stunning - not only does he make it sound like a real musical instrument, which is very rare- but a beautiful and moving musical instrument. At a Fopp instore Hawley played the song twice in a row, egged on by the crowd, just to get more Clive action. |

He didn't have a harmonica with him but he was superb last night at Rough Trade on Brick Lane, SPT... Played a load of old stuff plus the new single. His banter's pretty good too, although he swears more than I bloody do... |

sorry to go on about the smiths again, but the bit on the version of sill ill off hatful of hollow has a good bit of harmonica at the beginning, and maybe at the end too. |

Surprised Anarchy didn't mention The Dirtbomb's "Ode to a Blackman" which has a reasonably neat-o harmonica bit - certainly much better than Marr's playing on "Hand in Glove", which is right up there with, er, Lennon's playing on "Love Me Do". Beefheart could play a mean harmonica. See especially "Nowadays a Woman's Gotta Hit a Man" and "Long Necked Bottles" (both on The Spotlight Kid). But, of course, for proper harp playing you can't beat those old black guys out of Chicargo in the 50s: Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson are particularly great. See also Sonny Terry, whose "Whoopin' the Blues" is currently being used on the Eon wind farm ad. |
