It has been brought to my attention that I can barely resist songs of any genre with a decent prechorus (cf Lily Allen's Everything's just wonderful, for god's sake) or a proper outro (cf Abe Vigoda's Animal ghosts, or Built to spill's Carry the zero). Are there particular song structures that you just can't resist? |

Big pounding drum intros get me every time - Goody Two Shoes by Adam Ant, New Rose by the Damned or most Redskins records being examples... |

songs that have That Velvet Underground driving guitar/drum sound a-la 'Waiting for the Man' - which I first heard done well by Jesus and Mary Chain on 'Some Candy Talking' - that bit towards the end where the drums go bananas as the guitars do that Velvets thing gets to me - love bands that use that style as a 'template'. |

I like a memorable intro like Oh mandy, Take me out, Come on eileen - I also like an intro that starts slow and then goes nuts like The Only living boy in new cross - I guess it's all about the intro for me. Songs are like books though - you have to hook them within the first couple of lines or the interest wanes - unless it's pink floyd. Then i'll wait. |

I always look out for a strong middle-eight ... It’s a sign of a skilled songwriter. They need to be more than just a key change... I also like a classic piano melody line: think Abba's "Money, money, money" And - as I've mentioned before here - the Harmonica dosen't get used as much as it should |

Any new thoughts on this old thread? I stand by mine. A pounding drumbeat and add the Strangeloves - I Like Candy to the list of records I listed earlier. |

I'm surprised I spotted it. With my illness I get chronic insomnia, so I got up at 5am after zero minutes sleep and made soup. So I'm not really with it today. #Fuzzy |
