Welcome to week in week out mediocrity tim!

I distinctly remember you defending him whilst at both Newcastle and WHAM as well (fair play too, I like the guy but I wouldn't let him within brain tumouring distance of my team) so it'll be interesting to see what happens to him at Norwich!

It could have been worse. Football Rumours said Sammy Lee was going to Norwich!

You've been spoilt then Jim...

We do have this strange tradition in Britain for assuming good old pro will make a good manager. Therefore a vicious bully like Roy Keane was being talked of as future United boss even before he'd retired and ditto Shearer at Newcastle. The game's littered with examples to the contrary, including just about all the 1966 team.

Indeed. We've managed to rack up a fair sprinkling of the duffers - but none with a bigger gap between their sense of self-worth and their actual ability as this twat:

who is above Bassett, Atkinson, Pearce and, yes, Megson, in the "former managers I'd least like to see back at the City Ground" list.

SPT - I remember watching an England game in the Old Monk in Nottingham on a Saturday afternoon about 5 years ago. I was intimidated to fuck by the sheer volume of local meatheads in the pub anyway... And then the camera panned round to show David Platt sitting in the crowd. I've never seen a pub erupt with such hatred, such contempt for the man. Someone even threw something at the screen... Many people were also brandishing knives (probably). Terrifying. I hope for his own sake he never sets foot in the City Ground again...

As a rule of thumb avoiding drinking in the city centre is the wisest course of action. But some people are such utter twats as to unite the meatheads and the, ahem, more considered support.

The final straw for most was not the inept performances, not the muddled tactics changed 3 times a game, not the emptying of the club's coffers on appalling signings who never played. It wasn't even that abysmal afternoon at Selhurst Park when the team literally played like the Keystone Kops - constantly runnng around in packs and colliding with each other off the ball. No, all of these things are simple ineptitude.

It was that, when Paul Hart got us into the play-offs through careful husbanding of the talented young players he'd developed himself in the youth team, Platt piped up on every available news outlet claiming Forest had done it on the basis of the sound foundations that he had laid and that we ought to be grateful to him. I simply can't find the words to express my contempt adequately.

By decent, I assume you mean to the standard of Trevor Morley, Ian Bishop, Julian Dicks and Lee Chapman and Ludek Miklosko. Now, they were awesome.

Trouble is Tim are there any better players than that at Norwich he can work with? Huckerby perhaps. If he gets you out of the mess you are in then he deserves the plaudits.

Has Ryan Jarvis played this season?

Huckerby is our best player for sure, but he's as much a liability to the club as he is an asset (he has a big mouth and needs to shut up and play)

We also have Cureton, Fotheringham, Russell, Martin, Marshall, Otsemobor, Drury... These are great players. I suspect a lot of them aren't performing out of choice because they're decent players who haven't liked the previous manager.

This managerial merry-go-round really frustrates me. Not least because the protagonists are nearly always grizzled old pros who are only available because they haven’t been able to land a cushy media job.

Can someone tell me WHY it is that ex-pros make good managers? The disciplines are completely different. Its more than just co-incidence that the game’s best managers have all had limited or non-existent playing careers. Moriniho got to the top of his game by acting a translator at Barca FFS !!

I genuinely believe that any average fan on the street with rudimentary man management skills could do a better job than most of the "top" managers discussed on this thread… Football is a great example of one big boys clubs full of incompetent idiots

Completely agree. I see Sheff Utd fans are fed up of Brian Robson now, which backs up your argument about useless old pros. It’s a closed shop though – I’m not sure how he’d have performed as a football manager but just look at the way people blocked Clive Woodward, who’d managed a team of top sportsmen to the Egg Chasers’ World Cup title.
