I suspect it might be the rant I did against rock parents a while ago (shortly after becoming a parent in fact...). But that shouldn't be it - since I explicitly said there's no objection to older people at gigs (er, for obvious reasons). I was bemoaning the fact the band's parents tend to be there and what that means - which is very different. Indeed it's a curmudgeonly and deeply old fogeyish article moaning about the new music scene itself (as Ged said in his Jack Penate review, we really don't get what young people's music is about nowadays - with its smoke- and booze-free early evening gigs all about having fun). It's a bit like it was being a football fan at the beginning of the 90s when suddenly it became socially acceptable and any vestiges of Thatcher-baiting outsider status that you had from going to a game went west. The band's parents represent music's prawn sandwich brigade deserting the Sting concert and coming on to our territory - fight them with sticks say I!(Er, unless of course, in a few years time, it's me - in which case buy me a pint and we'll have a moan) So welcome sharpartmusic - I strongly suspect you're one of us - pitching in not far above the average age, that's for sure... |

They probably are rebelling in their own right we're just so out of touch we haven't worked out how yet... Your son's an exception, band parents do exist - i've seen them (it was the Mirimar Disaster that kicked off the rant - parental sponsered thrash-metal noise has to be wrong, even though they were pretty good...) To be honest, Mrs SPT and I have even been to a gig with the bass player's mum, so guilty already... |

I don't like Orton, with or without the posh parents. She's boring. Even her name is boring. I loved the Scissor sisters having their parents at their gigs - at one stage Jake Shears was 'humping' Ana Matronic on stage and she was squealing 'My mum is so proud of me, stand up mum!' and her mum stands up like a little, sweet lady waving as the simulated sex takes place... |
