Best original scores: Psycho (Bernard Herrmann) Vertigo (Bernard Herrmann) (Overated film, but excellent soundtrack) Once Upon A time In The West (Ennio Morricone) L'Ange (Michelle Bokanowski) Sweet Smell Of Success (Elmer Bernstien) L'Ascenseur Pour Léchafaud (Miles Davis) Best soundtracks from pre-existing music: Hairspray Pink Flamingos (not actually released as album, but it had Link Wray & Little Richard, so I'm including it anyway). Atomic Café |

Quite so! Some of my faves at the moment: Rushmore & Royal Tenembaums soundtracks Valerie and Her Week Of Wonders (high-five, Minge Bucket) The Wicker Man (in your face, Captain Howdy) Love Liza (not released as an album, but full of fantastic Jim O'Rourke music) The Billion Dollar Brain, by Richard R. Bennet Black Sabbath, by Roberto Nicolosi & Orchestra Hatchet For The Honeymoon, byLuigi Zito & Orchestra Morvern Callar In The Mood For Love Grace Of My Heart Dario Argento soundtrack stuff - there's a good comp called Puro Argento Vivo And pretty much everything ever done by Ennio Morricone. I particularly recommend the various El Records compilations, and "Crime & Dissonance" |

Am I the only person who doesn't like Movie soundtracks? I used to own a few. I never ever played them. They are (usually) like a poor man's compilation tape/CDr. |

I used to, as a rule, have a lot of scorn for film soundtracks. Then I heard the Rushmore soundtrack and it worked so perfectly that I had to reassess my position. Then I got into Ennio Morricone, and watched stuff like The Wicker Man and Valerie, and started to really appreciate how an individual or group can compose musical magic for a film that stands alone as a set of compositions. I think my favourite kind of film soundtracks will always be ones composed entirely by one person or group - after all, how does that really differ from a regular album? |
