In simple terms mp3 is considered a lossy format. This means that when creating a mp3 file the process throws away bits not generally heard by people in order to get a compression ratio of 7:1 sometimes higher. The higher level of compression using lower bitrates means the greater chance of hearing artefacts in the mp3 track. Most people cannot distinguish between a mp3 of 192 k/bits variable bitrate to the original CD track.

Lossless means just that. Nothing is lost when converting a CD or vinyl track to a lossless format and the track will be identical to the original. However this means the compression level is generally a 2:1 ratio although sometimes it is possible to get a 3:1 ratio depending on the type of music.

For example in mp3 the Fischers Releases is about 12MB - the FLAC version is 40MB.

What does all this mean? In the early days lower bitrate mp3's were perfect for dial up users as it meant they could be downloaded in around 20 minutes. Now days with broadband and the cheaper cost of hard drive space means people can download a 25mb track in five minutes or less.

Lost Music Records just wants those who don't want to buy the 7" single for whatever reason (no turntable etc) to have another quality release option hence the release in the FLAC format. We will make the releases available via lossy formats on e-music and i-tunes once Trev sends me the artwork!!!

You can play FLAC files in Windows Media Player if you install this .

You used to be able to play them in i-tunes but since the latest releases of Quick Time, which i-tunes uses to play the tracks, it's no longer possible. Apple wankers!

You can of course convert the FLAC files to any other format you want such as Apple or Windows Media Lossless as well as mp3 3tc.
