Any fans of Armenian bum trumpets, Peruvian nasal flutes, didgeridoos or didgeridon'ts?... I know the definition of what is or isn't world music is vague but any fans of stuff that could be termed ethnic or basically not Western rock?

Still playing the Beirut album almost daily, months after its release though it's arguable whether it counts as its eastern flavours are mixed with more orchestral rock/pop (eg Arcade Fire). Was always a massive fan of a lot of African music, particularly southern stuff from Zimbabwe and S Africa (especially Bhundu Boys and Four Brothers).

Also soukous from the former French speaking colonies. And there was also a marvellous comp that the NME put out in one of its few enlightened moments, in the 80s called World At One; a cracking comp of stuff from all over. Can you imagine them doing that now - their accountants and marketing men would just say "Where's the payback? Where's the advertising revenue?"

Anyway, any good 'world music' people have discovered?

I love Indonesian gamelan music, used to belong to a regular gamelan group actually a while back which was really fun. It's just a great form of music that's incredibly instinctive and really quite meditative. It's also amazing that the traditions and practices have remained constant and the instruments themselves are just sooo pretty, just look:

Agree about Tinariwen. There was another group comprised of members of the Polisario Front whose name escapes me who were similar. I like most Middle Eastern music.

I have that World At One compilation. I can post it if anyone wants to hear it.

I like that Terry Hall album from a few years back "The Hour of Two Lights"; which features lots of North African and middle Eastern artists and strange instruments

I'm not sure if a western artist "discovering" obscure foreign stuff really counts ... but its certainly a cut above "Graceland"

I had the album with "more like God" on it!

There was also an album before with that Skinhead O'Conner on it too with "visions of you".

Saw them for the first time on the "Beat" with whispering Gary Crowley (who i still think is a genius). Miss that programme.

I love the Wobbles bass playing. He played the bass on Bjorks "play dead" too.

I've been meaning to invest in some more Wobble but the collaboration between him and Chaka Demus and Pliers scared me off a bit.
