Those lovely people at the Arts Council have come up with a new initiative designed to help more people get involved in learning and playing music. TAKE IT AWAY allows individuals to apply for a loan of up to £2,000 for the purchase of any kind of musical instrument, and pay it back in nine monthly instalments, completely interest free. Take it away is open to everyone (over the age of 18), but primarily designed to help those who might otherwise be unable to afford an instrument appropriate for their needs. Agreed. We may not be able to compete with the Far East at producing cheap mass manufactured products but we're still one of the best places for producing new music. Add the immense social benefits that can come from giving young people the opportunities to fulfill dreams to the financial benefits that have historically come from our music industry, it's a no brainer. |

It's a wonderful idea. BUT I fear that the people who need the most money to buy musical gear (like really poor people in East End slums whose parents can't afford to buy them stuff) are the people who will have the most trouble in filling out the Arts Council's gargantuan forms. If this problem can be solved and becomes about need rather than who can fill out a form best then, it's a smashing idea. You'd be surprised about how a terrible form for something is actually a barrier to participation. You should've seen the lengths my poor mum had to go to just to get a disabled badge for her car even though she can barely walk... sad stuff. |

Actually, the forms are dead simple. This has been around for a while, it's an excellent scheme. |
