Sounds XP Presents: Wednesday March 5th 2008 , 18 Kentish Town Road, Camden, London, NW1 9NX Bluegrass for beginners Hayman, Watkins, Trout and Lee say they are "four indie kids at heart but blues, folk and country have caused us to stray from the path." The band feature Darren Hayman (Hefner, The French) on bass/vocals, Dan Mayfield (Enderby, Ellis Island Sound, The Secondary Modern) on violin, Dave Tattersall (The Wave Pictures) on guitar/vocals and Dave Watkins (Pete and the Egg, The Secondary Modern) on banjo. They say they sound like "rough and ready bluegrass! occasionally lacking in finesse and dexterity but always fun and never boring." Come and hear the results for yourself! A must for indie and Roald Dahl fans everywhere! I swear if I was younger and more tremulous I would have a plethora of their lines etched out on the covers of my English books. In blood. I’d be falling over myself to pledge undying adoration for this group, just as I would be falling under buses in striving to cover my love for the individual who goes for those pretty boys in the first place. But hey, that’s the magic of Pop. Isn’t it wonderful? - Unpopular ... gentle psychedelia of chilly English fields at dawn...... "They play bizzare-but-pretty English folk and this début makes us want to take our clothes off, grow hooves, become fawns and talk to trolls all day. It's the equivalent of watching Lord Of The Rings and smoking flakes of crushed butterflies" - NME scuffling drums, fuzzed out guitar, driving bass grooves and off-kilter power-pop melodies It's everything and more you want from an indie pop band. Well written songs, girl vocals, some jangling guitars and some lovely melodic sounds coming from the keyboards. I have seen Esiotrot before and they were fab. Same goes for The Left Outsides and Foxes. Never seen Hayman, Watkins, Trout and Lee - before. Should be a good one. |

For members of this forum and our Facebook Group will are offering cheap list spaces at £4 entry to this gig rather than the £6 on the door. If you want to attend at this cheaplist price then e-mail tom@soundsxp.com by 4pm tomorrow (05/03). There is a provision though. You must be in the venue by 9pm. After that time and depending on the number of people attending we may not be able to guarantee entry at the cheaplist price mentioned. Did all of the XP faithful get so shitfaced last night they're too fragile to report back today or something? Sorry I couldn't make it. Casiotone was good 'n' all but don't know whether he was worth travelling to Shepherd's fucking Bush for... heh. |

We were relatively sober (well, only half shitfaced... should that be shitchinned?). It was great though the turnout was disappointing (maybe people didn't show when they knew you'd pulled out, Westie). Thoroughly recommend Foxes! and Esiotrot. Darren Hayman loved the latter though I did point out to him that it was probably because they sounded just like Hefner. H, W, T & L were great and there was some very funny on stage SoundsXP banter between Dave and Darren about their SXP writers poll placings. |
