DRM is the reason why so many people download illegally. The music industry knows this hence the move by the major labels to make their catalogues available in DRM free mp3 at places like 7digital, Amazon etc. |

This is a generational thing – people like us have always associated music with a physical format and therefore get a buzz from holding a CD or piece of vinyl. That’s hardwired into our brain and won’t die out until we do, hence our spending too much at Indietracks because we actually remember taking pleasure in buying some plastic artefact that is in limited supply. Kids today don’t have that association – for them music is all around and their issue is about navigating the musical ocean. There is an upside to digital – one day soon everything is going to be available at a click of a button. The issue won’t be access to music, as it was in our youth, but managing the music that is available. Right now there’s a cost but there won’t be soon – for one thing, they’ll find ways of incorporating adverts into free music streams. So when some hipster teen hears Alex Turner talk about Scott Walker on a podcast, he or she will have almost immediate access to Scott 1-4, Jacques Brel, and everything else. And the kids won’t think this is unusual. I’m totally with Bananas in not trusting digital but I recognise that my way of thinking belongs to the age of the dinosaurs! |

Spot on, Anarchy. I still waste money finding out what some name dropped band from the 60s or 70s, say, was like, when at the touch of a button if I bothered to make the most of the net I could find out for nothing. My son, for example, will never do that (he's 12 and already doesn't understand why I buy albums on CD for £8.99 when I could buy the three good tracks for 79p each off iTunes). |

I guess it will eventually signal the deathknell for the album in a way, the concentration on the single track. Which is a shame, there's nothing like a well put together album that peaks and flows. I think there's still a place for both(downloads/physical records), but as has been said as the new generations grow so physical records will be less sought after which is a shame(its happening already). Band's are having to diversify now though, using live revnues, selling merchandise, offering bonus tracks if you buy the cd, offering extras for those that are really dedicated. The big label industry has creeked into recognising what's been happening in the last fifteen years, its still trying to close its eyes and hope it will all go away. They have to embrace it fully really, otherwise most band's won't need them. |
