Totally in agreement with you boys here, a player leaves to join you main rivals, basically rubbing your supporters faces in it, then they deserve the stick they get (within reason obviously). It shows the level of loyalty that the current money grabbing self obsessed prima-donnas have nowdays. If you compare it to the attitude of the majority (for use of a better expression) older generation footballers there is no comparision. Stuart Pearce for example....was basically told by Gullit at Newcastle that he wasn't required any more. The only club that offered him a contract was Derby - which he turned down on principle that he couldn't betray the Forest supporters who had supported him and paid his wages for many years. That's proper footballing loyalty if you ask me. The modern crop of poseurs could learn a lot about the game from players like that. Maybe its just a case that most players these days are playing from such an early age, that they aren't actually supporters of the game, where as in the past when lads were being signed by thier local clubs in thier later teens they had usually spend years on the terraces first, and actually understood the passion and rivalry that existed between fans. All I know is, if one of our boys was ever to sign for the scummers, then thats it as far as I'm concerned. All his WFC privaledges are over and its open season in the abuse stages should we play them....sorry....its just the way it is.... |

^ A very articulate and honest account of what it means to be a football fan for some people... very good. And remember Sol's case is made all the more worse by him leaving to Arsenal on a free transfer when his contract was up, despite him being valued at £30 million the previous season. I'm all for his 'betrayal' being fired back at him from the terraces but this chant Bovine's referencing to me just reads like a continuation of the "abuse that went too far". It's hardly going to be belted out by the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Coalition for Racial and Sexual Equality is it? Basically, to bring up his race and sexuality AGAIN (no matter how cleverly worded to avoid being done by the police, as Bovine put it) is just ridiculous. What I don't like is the thought of a father in the crowd with his 6-year-old son and his son asking "Daddy, why are they singing that?". I mean he could get a nice intellectually enlightening education on the tale of the Last Supper but I don't think he will... |

Rightly or wrongly that ditty does represent the way any supporter would feel about a player who throughout a season insists that he intends to sign a new contract, but that he wants to do it after the season finishes, so that it doesn't take his mind off his football, insisting that he has a special bond with the supporters of that club; only for him to run down his contract so that he can get a free transfer to that club's fiercest rivals, leaving the club that nutured him from his youth having to spend a sizable amount of the budget intended for stregthening the squad on replacing the turncoat. Having said that I'm more the type to cheer on my team than berate the other lot. Having said that , I felt more embrrassed than elated when Pavlyuchenko scored last night! |
