| Post subject: | Any good recent novels? |
Waste way too much time wandering around the same old footy and music websites on the net and desperate to start reading good novels again. So... can people nominate good recent-ish novels. Please give at least a sentence on what the book's about so that I can make a list of ones that at least sound like my bag of onions rather than wade through irrelevant ones. |

I am reading Bill Bryson's book on Shakespeare. Not as dull as it sounds and is a very good read. Also got Hanief Kureshi's latest one to follow that about some bloke having a midlife crisis called Something To Tell You. |

I'm half way through a book called 'Veronica' by Mary Gaitskill. 1980s New York fashion model tale. So far, so good. |

Willy Vlautin (singer from Richmond Fontaine) is a good writer. First one was Motel Life which was a nice read about a couple of losers/drifters and the latest one Northline is a bit deeper about a girl who gets dealt bad hands and seeks solace in her imaginary friendship with Paul Newman. John Niven's Kill Your Friends is a must read. Nasty, nasty piece of writing about cuntish A&R men. Hilarious. Currently reading The Osssians by Doug Johnstone whose in one of those Fence Collective bands. Semms alright so far. About a ego-head singer trying to find his Scottish identity while consuming a lab ful of drugs on tour of the highlands. Or...anything by Cormac McCarthy. |

I entirely agree with Ted on Crime and Punishment - it's utterly great for the first couple of hundred pages (effectively the crime) really like a completely modern crime novel, but I've never made it to the end |
