Liverpool mustn't play a game, no, but this apparently is fine: Where do you start? |

Maybe Boris Johnson was right when he said (as reported on the BBC): 'Liverpudlians "wallow" in their "victim status", adding it is part of the "deeply unattractive psyche" of many in the city.' After all, 96 dead, no-one officially held accountable, survivors with post-traumatic stress and at least one suicide but it'll all feel better when the mayor and a couple of washed up musos hand over a CD (expect another Farm compilation this Christmas now). |

Contrast Liverpool FC’s attitude to Hillsborough with its attitude to Heysel. Both tragedies involving loss of life, the fans the victim of the former and largely responsible for the latter. Hillsborough is (deservedly) remembered throughout Anfield in a number of ways. A small plaque commemorating Heysel’s victim was hidden behind a vending machine for years (FACT). I guess its just easier to grieve when you haven’t got blood on your hands |

I have mixed feelings about this because obviously Hillsborough was a dreadful incident and would have a lasting effect not only on those there but the city itself. But... Beyond this particular horror there's something quite peculiar about the Scouse mentality anyway. It seems as if the word Liverpool can't appear in print without the accompanying phrase "a city united in grief", whether it's the death of a local or a piece of toast dropped butter side down. When did either team last play without a black armband? When did a lampost in Grieverpool not have a medley of red and blue shirts and scarves draping it...? |
