12. The England football team. At the start of the decade, robbed by Bonetti and the Hun of a semi-final place in Mexico. Then there were years of naffness. 13. (also see 4) Don Revie. 14. The British motor industry 15. The Eastern European motor industry (my mate's dad used to import Wartbergs from E Germany) 16. Dirty rundown cities. 17. right wing politics and racism. 18. ITV sitcoms (plus ça change) 19. long hair. 20. patterned shirts. On the bright side - Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers. Punk. Colour telly. The Sweeney. Lesley Judd on Blue Peter. the first LCD watches! |

I don't mind being 'shit', then, I love Marc Bolan and there were more strings to his heavenly bow than just 'glam rock', he knew how to write a great pop song. That said, I am a fan of original glam, so na na nee na na. anyway, rubbish things: 21) brown 22) beige 23) turquoise |

The back end of the 70s gave us some fantastic music, but other than that it was a horrible decade in which to spend the whole of your teens, as I did. I feel very little nostalgia for it. I lived on an estate which was, frankly, violent. Youth culture was fragmented to the point that if you belonged to a particular faction you were fair game for a kicking from any other faction. As much as I loved being a punk, so many of the memories involve running away from skins, rockers etc or having to fight your way out of a pub or club. I discovered punk in the first place because a bunch of us were fleeing from Chelsea supporters following a midweek match at Bramall Lane, and scooted into the Top Rank, where the vastly underrated Vibrators were playing. Then we got Thatcher and everything became even worse for a very long time...................... |

This thread should not exist and nor should the comment about Marc Bolan. I strike it all from the record. |
