As for the rest, well, I still get a buzz out of new music but likewise I get a thrill out of finding great old music (usually via 60s comps). My absolute favourite nights out these days are gig nights when there's a good crowd of chums there. And my least favourite times are the days after gig nights when I'm reminded that I'm actually an old gimmer and can't hack loads of booze, last trains and early starts the following day.

Depends what you are into, really, doesn't it?

My stock answer for people who say there is no good music this year or any recent year is simply: You are not looking hard enough.

And that seems to be the case with you, Tim - going from what you've said above. As you've not listened to anything to expose you to new bands recently. I gave up caring what the NME had to say about bands at least 15 years ago, probably 20. I'm 39. And 2009 has been one of the best years for music I've ever known. Same could be said about 2008, 2007, 2006 and on. Pointless listing bands as you probably don't have the same tastes as me. But there is great music being made, released and played live. You've just got to want to find it.

Saying all that in the mid 90s (93-96) pre me being connected to the internet I went through a phase of not caring about new music. Mainly because I couldn't find out about it. The NME/Melody Maker were cack at the time. John Peel was on at a time that I couldn't listen, having got a proper job for the first time in 1993. So I literally had no way of finding out about what was out there. I got the internet in 1995 and by 1996/1997 I was ordering loads of records from the USA by bands that you, then, couldn't find in UK shops where I lived.

Yeah, I like a lot of new bands in canada that are on six shooter records, I listen to new music on myspace but I generally don't have the motivation to find new music these days. I don't know where this apathy has come from, though I am always busy.

It's also about levels of interest. You're into music, Tim but I'd guess you're even more into films. I love films but don't bust a gut finding out what's coming soon so end up missing loads and relying on recommendations.

One day someone will create a music site that really does throw back genuine "If you like this then you'll love..." style recommendations - a free mp3 version of Amazon. It'd be amazing. Everything that currently attempts it seems to be way off the mark.

Hmmm. Maybe that's it. I love music to the point where I now write and play music but now that listening to music bores me more than writing it does. For a while, after I left uni, I had little interest in what films were around and what was happening in cinema because there was no way for me to get involved in it. I formed a band in Bournemouth because it was easier to be creative and write narrative songs in the way that I'd write a narrative film but now I'm working a regular job again, with regular hours, for a film distribution company, I've taken an interest in new cinema over the last couple of years because it's more likely I can make another short film outside of work in my spare time and I like to see new work. I have been watching more films lately, it's true.

So it's not a mid-life crisis and I'm not out of touch. Thank God for that.
