Sarcasm is only the lowest form of wit to people (like Oscar Wilde) who never went to my school, where sarcasm was quite high up the "wit food-chain", well above (for example) holding down a small helpless child and repeatedly spitting in his face, or, indeed, punching someone in the face. Actually, few people know the full context of Wilde's quote. It went something like this: Wilde: Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. [Pauses for admiring laughter which doesn't come.] Bloke: Oh, that's really funny, Oscar. Wow, I think I might actually die laughing. Never, in the whole history of humanity has there been such an insightful and witty comment as that. How can I possibly respond? Hang on - I've got it! [Bloke punches Wilde on the nose then repeatedly spits in his face.] PS. Ta for the good word. Always gratefully received. |
