So if the UK was to produce a COOOOOL version of Eurovision with acts from pop history representing an area, who'd be the groups/artists performing? The regions: South West London North West North East East Midlands South East East Anglia Scotland N Ireland Wales West Midlands Yorkshire I'm going to have to give this some thought. For example my immediate reaction is to nominate Dexys for the west midlands... but are they better than the Specials, or in the grand scheme of things... <spit> Led Zep? In my mind they are but should it be about influence, impact, innovation...? |

Will have changed my mind about half of these by morning, but here goes... South West - Joe Meek Honourable mentions – The Troggs, Daphne Oram, The Adverts, Ralph Vaughan Williams London – The Kinks Honourable mentions- The Pretty Things, T.Rex, Raincoats, Subway Sect, Sex Pistols, Eater, PIL, Slits, Wire North West – The Fall Honourable mention - Buzzcocks, Notsensibles, Distractions North East – Somebody please tell me that there are better bands from the North east than The Angelic Upstarts and Toy Dolls East Midlands – Struggling here too – quite like the first Bauhaus 12” just bought a split 45 by The Ludds & The No Brainers that's pretty good South East – The Rolling Stones Honourable mentions – Dr Feelgood, Milkshakes East Anglia – Country Teasers (cheating by counting Hertfordshire as East Anglia and also ignoring the facts that The Teasers were formed in Scotland and later based in London; but The Rebel is from St Albans) Scotland – Fire Engines Honourable mentions – Rezillos, Revillos, Orange Juice, Josef K, Anteeks West Midlands – Specials Honourable mentions – Swell Maps, Slade, Nightingales, Killjoys, Delia Derbyshire, Prefects Northern Ireland – The Undertones Wales – The Velvet Underground (well one quarter of them anyway) Yorkshire – John Barry Honourable mention – Throbbing Gristle , Cabaret Voltaire |

I forgot Billy Childish for the South East. But how the hell do Eater get an honourable mention for London? Apart from the half-decent Thinking of the USA single, weren't they just famous for beng young? |
