The Piney Gir Country Roadshow "Jesus Wept" CD digipak This album sees Piney grow up and face hard facts; hard facts that can make many a country song that much better. "'A tear in my beer' ain't the half of it," says Piney. Recommended. The Humms "Lemonland" CD Following their ace EP last year, The Humms return with a full length album on Oddbox Records. Hurrah! It's an utterly brilliant, catchy, funpacked, demented garage punk/pop fest and not to be missed. Hugely recommended. Various Artists "Pick N'Mix A Bubblegum Records Compilation" Double CD Excellent and diverse indiepop compilation from Scottish label, Bubblebum records. Tesco Chainstore Mascara "Good Foundations" CD digipak Indiepop duo TCM bang out nearly a dozen tune-filled pop songs in just over half an hour on this debut CD. Here's the science bit: Two indiekids-at-heart + one cassette + five compilations + four EPs + three 7" singles = seventeen fizzing, indiepop songs! Phil Wilson "God Bless Jim Kennedy" 12 inch 25 years or so after The June Brides LP, Phil Wilson return with another album! Very much worth the wait, God Bless Jim Kennedy is full of the kind of fine pop songs you'd expect. A great return! It's also out on CD but we only have the LP. We Are The Physics "Are OK At Music" CD digipak New budget price issue of the We Are The Physics debut from 2008. These purveyors of completely fictional mutant science punk rock hail from Glasgow taking inspiration from Devo, The Skids, Polysics, Buddy Holly and Ex Models. Mecca Normal "Malachi" 7 inch Gentle lofi folk-pop from Mecca Normal on the International Pop Underground imprint of K Records. Allo Darlin "My Heart Is A Drummer" 7 inch Fourth single from their debut album, and my personal fave, with it's bouncy drums, that afro bass solo and it's melodic nod to Cyndi Lauper! The b-side is a lovely acoustic version of their previous single 'If Loneliness Was Art'. Bearsuit "Please Don't Take Him Back" 7 inch A funky, catchy little number from Bearsuit on the debut single for their new label Fortuna POP! 'Please Don't Take Him Back' has a right old school eighties pop feel, hints of Human League and the like. Nice! City Center "Zen Kids" 7 inch Nice bit of atmospheric shoegazy guitar pop from NYC band City Center. On the Dub Narcotic imprint of K Records You Say Party Vs. Duloks "Suck It / Making Plans For Oliver" 7 inch The first release on Club The Mammoth's record Label with You Say Party (Formerly You Say Party! We Say Die!) going head to head with The Duloks for this exclusive split EP release. Hotpants Romance "The International" CD Lancashire lasses Hotpants Romance return with a new abum on Cherryade. I saw them live earlier this year and a finer set of caterwauling garage punk fun you're unlikely to see. Plue the trio had ace beehives. Highly recommended. Napoleon IIIrd "Christiania" CD digipak Entitled "Christiania" after the 'self proclaimed autonomous area' Freetown Christiania in Copenhagen, the album is a collection of lushly textured pop songs, operatic indie and rich drones, all on the subject of small-town life. Lots of new stock in time for Chrimbo, natch: The Just Joans "Seasonal Greet" 3 inch CD Lovely Seasonal offering from everyones fave Motherwell indiepop duo The Just Joans. Heartwarming like a box of quality street, a glass of sherry and a turkey sandwich in front of the fire. Seapony "Dreaming" 7 inch Fantastic indiepop with a gorgeous dreamy quality that reminds me of a mix of Field Mice and Shop Assistants. Very similar to their peers the Blanche Hudson Weekend but less noisy/more etheriel. The Chanteuse And The Crippled Claw "Are You One?" 7 inch This is ultra-catchy pop like the soundtrack to a spooky megadrive zombie game morphed with every brilliant 60s theme tune you can think of. Sheffield-based Salford prankster Adrian Flanagan is at the helm and the gorgeous Candie Payne provides vocals. Eux Autres "Broken Bow" CD digipak UK debut album from US 3-piece Eux Autres (don't ask me how it's pronounced, i've not a clue!) Whatever, the album is a top mix of indiepop/garage harmonies. There's depth to the melodies too, with some lovely powerpop moments. Lê Almeida "Mono Maçã" 3 inch CD New on WeePOP! Girls Names/Brilliant Colors "I Lose/You Win" 7 inch New split single from Tough Love Records. Piskie Sits "The Way I'd Like To Go" CD digipak Great to hear a new EP from Piskie Sits. Their album back in 2007 was - in my humble opinion - criminally underrated! Sure, they wear their US alt-rock influences on their sleeves, but they deliver the goods again with four excellent tunes. The Crookes "Dreams Of Another Day" CD Sheffield romantics The Crookes debut for Fierce Panda on this 7 track EP compiling their early singles and demos, ahead of a full album in the new year. Plenty of jangly pop gems on here, reminiscent of The Housemartins or Gene at their best. The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart "Heart In Your Heartbreak" 7 inch The Loves "December Boy" 7 inch Sort-of-Christmas single from The Loves on Fortuna Pop. 'December Boy' builds on the chorus from Big Star's 'September Gurls' and chisels out a new delightlful 60s-inspired pop nugget. Is it me, or is there a cheeky hint of Band Aid in there too?! Feedle "The Evening Wore On" CD digipak Great album from Sheffield one-man-band artist Feedle, which slips effortlessly from glitchy electronica to ghostly melodic pop and ambient tract. It's an ambitious approach that could be cold and distant, but oozed warth and humanity. Highly recommended. Blackbird Blackbird/Paopao "Pure/So Sorry, Girl/Liberia" 7 inch First release from new label Double Denim featuring two acts. Blackbird Blackbird give us two song; atmopheric shoegazing and electro balladry, respectively. Paopao have a gentle techno feel with New Order-ish pop vocals. Starlings "Weight In Gold" 7 inch Anthemic 80's tinged electropop from new Sheffield chaps Starlings. We Are Animal "Idolise" CD Dancey indie rock full of buzzing guitars, big choruses, and driving drums. Nice stuff. Cornershop "The Battle Of New Orleans EP" CD wallet New EP from Cornershop sees them continuing their penchent for laid back, soulful 60s/70s rock as so expertly executed on their recent album Judy Sucks a Lemon for Breakfast. |

Very recommended. Big Deal "Homework" 7 inch "Homework" is such a lovely acoustic indipop song. I first heard it on Tom Ravenscroft's 6music show and just had to track it down. On new label, the aptly-named Records Records Records. Standard Fare / One Happy Island "Standard Fare on One Happy Island" 7 inch 2011 kicks off for Standard Fare and One Happy Island with a simple proposition: Each covers one track from their counterpart’s album and each introduces a new original. It's all packaged as a 4 track EP, with glorious indiepop results! Biff Bang Pow "The Girl Who Runs The Beat Hotel" CD digipak Re-release of this great album on Berlin's Vollwert Records, as originally released on Creation in the late 80s. Biff Pang Pow! "Pass The Paintbrush, Honey" CD wallet CD re-release of the excellent debut Biff Bang Pow! album from way back in, erm, 1985 I think. This is my fave BBP album and include the excellent indiepop rush of 'Wouldn't You?' and the psych-tinged 'A Day Out With Jeremy Chester'. A Fine Day For Sailing "Summer Blonde" 7 inch It's a summer feel to this breezy pop tune from A Fine day For Sailing, with hints of The Beach Boys, Teenage Fanclub and The Association. Nice. Various Artists "Scared To Dance Winter 2010/2011" fanzine Latest fanzine from Scared To Dance. Includes inteviews with The Vaselines, Edwyn Collins, Ballboy, WeePOP!, Northern Portrait and more. Comes with a free compilation CD od christmas tunes from Where It's At is Where You Are. Patterns "New Noise" CD wallet Debut release from Manchester's new label Pull Yourself Together Records. Patterns explore a shoegazy, rhythmic musical territory in a similar vein to Animal Collective. Especially good is the melodic and etheriel drone of "Wrong Two Words". Liechtenstein "Passion For Water" 7 inch Great single from Liechtenstein. Full of their usual bubblyness "Passion for Water" marries bouncy Orange Juice rhythms with Shangri-Li vocals. Highly Recommended. Tillmanns "A Careless Lifestyle" CD digipak We've got a restock of this great Tillmans album on Fraction Discs of Sweden. Bardo Pond "Just Once" 7 inch Great acoustic psych from Bardo Pond on this new 7 from Fire Records. Palm Springs "No Hurt Like A Broken Heart" CD An album of beautifully melancholic indiepop from Brighton duo Palm Springs, reminiscent of The Orchids/Fieldmice though with a more cinematic palette. The arrangements are replete with stylish touches that add rather than take away from their themes of regret and sorrow. Feelings familar to all, but rarely so well articulated. Palm Springs "The Hope That Kills You" CD Second album from Palm Springs sees a progression from their excellent first. Musically it's a grander more uplifting feel, with wonderful orchestral pop flourishes. Highly Recommended. |
