Not a vintage year for music, but a good one for new films. I think at least half the films I went to the cinema to see in 2010 were old films showing at rep cinemas or festivals, so I've probably missed a few gems amongst the new releases. Best new releases I did get to see: A Prophet Oil City Confidential Winter's Bone The Arbor Of Gods And Men Mother Kick Ass Skeletons Fish Story The Time That Remains Sus Splice Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll Worthy mentions: Inception Four Lions Women Without Men Mic Macs Rapt The Secret In Their Eyes Scot Pilgrim vs The World Catfish Best film festival screenings (not including revivals): Amigo (London Film Festival) Legacy (Raindance) Kino Karavan (Raindance) Splice (Sci Fi London) Best Revivals: Marketa Lazarova (1967) (NFT) The Cremator (1969) (Czech Film Festival) Somewhere In Europe (1947) (Hungarian Film Festival) W.C. Fields season (NFT) Portrait Of Queenie (1964) (London Film Festival) Duffer (1971) (Cinephilia West) Arsenic & Old Lace (1944)(NFT) Nothing (Sci Fi London) (2003) (Previously unseen in the UK) Best DVD unseen in UK cinemas: The Wild And Wonderful Whites Of West Virginia |

Seen about half of those new releases listed, and I'd agree they were very good - I think my vote would go to Skeletons (if only for having the weirdest named cast and crew - Tuppence Middleton and Paprika Steen are two of the actresses). |

For me it'd be Scott Pilgrim Vs The World Toy Story 3 Kick-Ass Gainsbourg Four Lions Youth In Revolt The worst film I saw was The Illusionist. The most depressing cartoon since When The Wind Blows. The only laugh (for me) came when I saw one of the animators was called Suk Bum Lee. |
