The one thing i've yet to get an answer to from anywhere is how can this idea be democratic? If services currently run by elected bodies are taken over by communities, how are they accountable? Or do the conservatives envision lots of little feifdoms run by local busibodies? A sort of modern feudalism? Yep, very reminiscent of that Back-To-Basics rubbish. |

This isn’t communism (for a start it wouldn’t be voluntary). “Dave” has been trying to sell The Big Society by dressing it up as some pseudo-anarchic utopia which, coming from a Thatcherite capitalist, is clearly bollocks. It’s the same old Tory message - If you need any service that doesn’t interest the market, you better do it all yourself. |

Under communism, in its purest form, the theory goes that 'the state' withers away - as this seems to be a form of impossible utopia I've tended to stick with more practical socialism, where the state is tangibly responsible for the welfare of its citizens, and they in turn contribute according to their means, etc. As for the BS, it's clearly a cover for cuts, this idea of a well-spring of altruistic endeavour being nurtured obviously utter nonsense. As Wurrzel has succinctly pointed out, it's just the same old Tories when it comes to things that don't interest 'the market'. |
