Checked out the BBC's guide to how the parties plan to campaign and was somewhat confused by the Communist Party's stance (ok, they probably represent no more than about 38 people these days). They intend turning it into a vote of confidence for the Government. Er, how will that work? Tories are against it, Lib Dems are for it... so will they vote for or against it? |

But we shouldn't let this bickering about the Milibands distract us from the essential drawback of proportional representation: it involves giving up even the mere hope that politics might be about more than prudent management in the face of global markets. It implies the death of progress or ideology and builds into the democratic process the notion that politics is simply concerned with finessing things at the margin. To be fair, that may just be facing up to reality. But it's a depressing prospect nonetheless. |
