Slow Down Tallahassee are Sheffield trio Nicola Coleman, Richard Butterworth and Claire Hill. But Slow Down Tallahassee have decided to split up! Consequently, their second album is both metaphorically and literally a goodbye.
Reflecting on the inevitable loss of innocence, the hazardous emotions and the finite nature of our fragile lives “Curly Cuh” continues Slow Down Tallahassee’s knack for dark lyrical imagery wrapped in the catchiest pop. To quote the deceptively energetic song ‘Saturday’:
"I’d laugh and play all day, long before us, and the mess we made.
The all at once there’s God and Love and someone sews my eyelids shut…"
As Nicola from the band says: “Lyrically this is our death album; we couldn't have gone anywhere else after ‘Saturday’, so it makes a kind of artistic sense to us that it is released posthumously.”
Reviews:
"A second terrific album...you can be pretty certain already that this is so much better than loads that will be lauded as the new greatest thing over the next few months."
Sounds XP
"If The Beautiful Light was snotty, knowing pop at its best, then 'Curly Cuh' is its world-weary, cleverer, more downcast older sister....they've left a mighty, mighty epitaph."
A Layer Of Chips
"The juxtaposition of great pop melodies mixed with really quite twisted lyrics keep it interesting and edgy and yet somehow still beautiful. With an album where every track is as strong as the next it’s difficult to pick out favourites. ‘Curly Cuh’ is one hell of a way to bow out."
Punk Rock Ist Nicht Tot
"Once again they demonstrate their uncanny ability to wrap dark, frank lyrics in a sweet, infectious pop confection. It’s an album that deals with sticky fingered love, kitchen sink heartbreak, missed opportunities and ultimately death. As a musical epitaph I’d say it’s pretty damn perfect."
The Von Pip Musical Express
"Girl group harmonies plus burbling synths and classic hook-laden pop undercut by wantonly dark and frank lyrical content. Something about it feels more isolated and lonelier even as Claire and Nicola pledge allegiance to companionship for ever, plausibly in memorial. A fitting epitath."
