Not aware they make any difference to anything but as Trev says, they feel nice and why else are you buying vinyl other than for the physical product? Think caring about vinyl thickness dates back to the late 80s when major labels in particular were keeping costs down by pressing up vinyl so thin it was barely more rigid than a flexi. Some of my albums from that time have not fared well for that reason. Give me a slab of plastic with a decent heft any day. |

In the 50s & 60s vinyl was thicker and the grooves were actually cut deeper, giving a better sound. Modern heavy vinyl pressings are usually cut from the same plates as the regular release, so ca't be cut any deeper. In effect you pay extra for some completely obsolete vinyl between the two sides. |

By the way, it is only relatively recently that I looked up how it is you can get stereo sound out of a single groove. Worth looking up if you've never thought about it. One of those elegantly simple bits of mechanics. |
